Mastic Beach Fire Department

On Friday October 14, 2005 the Mastic Beach Fire Department Firefighters and Commissioners fought the wind, heavy rain and flooding to respond to resident calls for help from flooded basements to evacuating homes to helping stranded vehicles.

The members of the Mastic Beach Fire Department had responded to almost 100 calls for help which started early Friday morning and continued all night long into Saturday afternoon.

Some of the photos attached show a resident receiving help after getting stuck in a flooded area at the end of Huntington Drive near the Bay. Lt. Carlo Grover, firefighter Ray Bell and Steve R using winch on the front of Unit 11 which is a Military duce and a half driven by Fire Commissioner Charlie O'Connor.

A call for help was received from a family that consisted of a female adult, and three children, one was a baby about 2 years old.

They had water about 6" deep all around their house and they were trapped inside until the Mastic Beach Fire Department arrived with the  Military duce and a half driven by Fire Commissioner Charlie O'Connor, Chief Mike Montella, Chief Anthony Capersino, Lt. Tom Montreuil, Lt. Carlo Grover and firefighters Ray Bell. Also on most of these calls were Commissioner Bill Biondi and Jim Rugen.

Lt. Tom Montreuil carried the baby to the safety of the rescue truck while the mother and other children were helped onto the rescue truck by the other firefighters.

Once the family were on board safely the were transported to the home of other family members on Commack Road also in Mastic Beach.

All the firemen mentioned in these few rescues and all the other firemen, Chief's, Ex-Chief's  and Commissioners that were answering other calls that we weren't able to photograph all did an outstanding job of rescuing Mastic Beach Residents all night long not going home to their own families during this time of need by the residents.

The Mastic Beach Fire Department would like to thank a gentleman named George who sent us some photos to our webmaster through this web site.

If it's been said once it can be said truthfully that one agency that you can always count on for assistance in any type of crisis is the Mastic Beach Fire Department and District.
