On Tuesday October 19, 2004 around 7:00 P.M. the Mastic Beach Fire Department received a signal 13 automatic alarm on Penwood Drive.

While they were responding to that location another alarm came in for a signal 13 at Longfellow Drive and Aspen Road.

Chief Pantanella radioed to County Control that he would be responding to the Penwood Drive location while Chief McGown radioed that he was responding to the Longfellow Drive location.

The call on Penwood turned out to be a false alarm so unit 3 was directed to respond to the Longfellow address to assist unit 2 which was driven by Anthony and on scene with Lt. Capersino in the officers seat.

Chief McGown was in charge of the Longfellow scene and directed the firemen to the basement where the oil burner was burning according to the home occupant who told Chief McGown that he had just got home and found the basement full of smoke.

The firemen went down to the basement and found that the flue pipe from the furnace was very hot and they removed it.

On the first floor the wall above the furnace was hot so it had to be open to check for fire inside the wall
