On Sunday October 17, 2004 in 55 degree weather at 10:00 A.M. while most people are sleeping or at church the Mastic Beach Fire Department held a training exercise for its firefighters.

The instructor was Lt. Mike Montella who was assisted by Lt. Anthony Capersino and Lt. David Bilodeau.

Chief Bill Biondi and 1st asst. Chief Jeff McGown were on hand to over see all training.

Lt. Montella instructed how to enter a roof by first checking for soft spots than making sure it is solid enough to work on and how to cut a hole safely.

Lt. Montella demonstrated the proper carrying and handling of the K-12 Saw also known as the partner which would be used to cut a vent hole in the roof.

Some other tools that the fireman would carry along with the K-12 saw are a 10  foot pipe pole and a halligan.

The fireman took turns entering the mock roof made for this training exercise and using the K-12 saw to cut a vent hole.

Lt. Capersino and Lt. Bilodeau helped the fireman through the roof cutting and venting.

Also a forced entry exercise was going on with some firemen being instructed on how to use a K-12 saw with a carbide blade to cut through heavy steel.

The firemen that took part in this training exercise were firefighter's Tom, Bob, Bruce, Ray, Justin, Kenny, Danny and Carlo.

The men each took a turn on cutting the roof to make a vent for smoke and heat to escape so firemen inside the burning structure can work on putting out the fire.
